My Girlfriend’s Jeans

Musings on music, music culture, and other random pop nonsense

Bye, bye, Paste Magazine 1 September 2010

You know how I just wrote a letter to the editor of Paste Magazine about how people in bookstores can be offended by opera singers covering Arcade Fire? Well, sadly, my dreams of being printed in the letter to the editor section has been squashed. Paste announced today that their print magazine is going on hiatus. Hiatus meaning suspended, as in there will be an attempt later down the line to bring it back, but we all know that chance is slim.

I have been a faithful Paste reader for five years now. I got a subscription when the mag featured my friend Amanda Kapousouz (a.k.a. Tin Cup Prophette) in their monthly sampler CD, and ever since (up until only recently) I could flip through Paste and see mention of a musician friend of mine, or a band I saw open for a musician friend. I discovered other great bands through it, and found new books to read and places to see. Plus, the magazine is based in Decatur, Georgia, my old stomping ground! If I hadn’t moved around so much I would have TOTALLY tried to get an internship with them. Just for the bragging rights, if nothing else. (The only summer I could have done it I got an internship with Brash Music, but that’s for another blog post.)

I’m really sad about this. Print journalism has been seeing a decline for ages, but this hits home more. I’m glad they’re going to try to keep up the website, so I can get a little more of my Paste fix. But this, coupled with the recent news that one of my favorite record stores, 52.5 Records in Charleston, is closing, makes for a little melancholy Amanda Mae.
